South Dalmatia

South Dalmatia represents the smallest part of the Dalmatian coast and located close to the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. In spite of the small acreage, the area has many interesting towns and areas that are worth a visit. Along the coast, you can enjoy relaxing days of sunshine on the amazing beaches, or enjoy a multitude of different activities.

The landscape in South Dalmatia includes mountains, islands, ocean and almond and olive groves with a lovely smell. If you move around in the region, you will also experience several places where vegetables and vine are grown.

The water along the coast is clear and pure as fresh spring water. The landscape extends along a narrow belt parallel to the coast. In many areas, there are large lime cliffs that extend out into the water’s edge and which require that bathers wear shoes.

The plant life is amazing with many different wild plant species. Cypress, lemon, almond and olive trees look like beautiful monuments along the coast.

DubrovnikLarge cities in South Dalmatia: Dubrovnik and Orebić

Far down on the Croatian coast line is Dubrovnik, also known as the ”Pearl of the Adriatic”. When you stand at the outer gate to the town, you should look up, where you will see the guardian angel of Dubrovnik, St. Blasius, who protects the town and its citizens. The town is interesting to visit because of its history and fascinating monuments.

The island Korcula and the peninsula Peljesac are areas that were already inhabited back in the Neolithian period 6000-8000 years ago and is well worth a visit.

Orebić is located on Peljesac and is a picturesque town. It is known as the town of captains, because many sea captains used to spend their retirement here. The view from the monastery that is located at a height of 150 metres over the nearby islands Kourcula, Mljet and Lastovo is an experience that you will always remember.

The national park on the island Mijet, which is rich in Mediterranean vegetation and cultural memorials, is definitely worth visiting. Here, you should for example see the Benedictine monastery from the 1100s.

Marco Polo’s home town Korĉula, on the island with the same name, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean.

The island Lokrum, which to this day is still uninhabited, is known for its amazing beaches. On this island, you should not miss Mrtvo More ”the dead sea”, which is a crystal-clear lake that gives a bathing experience beyond the usual for children as well as adults.

Sports activities in South Dalmatia

South Dalmatia also offers active holidays. There are plenty of possibilities for good, long walks and hikes in the rocky landscape. At the coast, you can enjoy a number of sports activities, such as surfing, diving, swimming and fishing.

Gastronomic characteristics in South Dalmatia

There are amazing dishes with fish as well as meat, with many different vegetables as accompaniment. The Kontonjata area is known for its quince pie, while the Rozata area is known for its eel from the river Neretva. The beverage for the local dishes is well-known wines, such as Dingac, Postrp and Konavlje.

The climate in South Dalmatia

The area has a Mediterranean climate, which is characterised by sunny and dry summers and mild winters. Summer rain is seldom in this area.
