Bornholm is also known as the Rocky Island or the Sunshine Island because of the many sunshine hours that it can offer. The climate on Bornholm is milder than in the rest of the country, which means that you can experience wild plants and flowers that you will not find in the rest of Denmark. Bornholm is a great place to spend your holiday, the landscape is very unique and special and should be experienced. The fishing villages on Bornholm are picturesque with the old fisherman’s cottages with timber framing and characteristic smokehouse chimneys.
The landscape
The nature on Bornholm is often emphasised as the island’s main attraction. Dramatic rocks that rise vertically from the ocean testify to the fact that the powers of nature have once been in play, and the island also offers green and luxuriant landscapes.
On its few square kilometres, Bornholm has so much variety that it constantly makes you wonder, and the island is a real paradise for nature lovers.
Beaches
The beaches are very varied, from wonderful, sandy beaches stretching for several kilometres that are ideal for the family with children to the more rocky coasts where you can find your own ”sunbathing rock”. Because of the many rocks that keep the Baltic Sea warm, Bornholm is known for its long bathing season that lasts all the way into September. On the southern coast is the well-known Dueodde beach, which is considered one of Europe’s best/largest beaches with some of the finest sand in the world.
Tourist attractions
Christiansø
After a sail of approx. 1 hour, either from Allinge or Gudhjem, you can visit Denmark’s most eastern point, the cluster of islands called Ertholmene, which may be most well-known under the name of the largest of the islands, Christiansø. Here, you will find King Christian V’s old fortress, which has been preserved so well that it almost looks like it did in 1684, when it was established.
Alminden
In the middle of Bornholm is Alminden, a giant green oasis where you can ”scale” Rytterknægten, which is one of the country’s largest hills with its 162 metres. The area also holds Bornholm’s largest rift valley with peculiar rock formations that look like mysterious caves, and you can test your voice in the well-known Ekkodal (echo valley). A hike in Alminden with its beautiful views, mysterious rock formations and the ruins of an old Viking fortress is definitely recommendable.
Hammershus
Hammershus, which is located on Northern Bornholm, is Northern Europe’s large fortress ruins.
Experience the fortress as well as the magnificent terrain on Hammerknuden, possibly together with a nature guide who can tell you about life at Hammershus.
In connection with the ruins, there is also a small exhibition showing what the fortress looked like, how people lived there and the findings that have been made in that location.
