
As soon as you arrive on Funen, you get a feeling of the cosy and calm atmosphere that characterises the island. The charming island that is also known as "Denmark's Garden" is very special and offers experiences for every taste, regardless of where you are on the island. Funen has more than 120 castles and manor houses and is surrounded by 90 small islands forming an archipelago. Around in the beautiful landscape are many cosy little villages and minor market towns that encourage to a visit with their well-preserved thatched half-timbered houses and beautiful village churches, before you continue along the small windy roads that lead you through an interesting and not least idyllic nature.
But the beautiful island has much more to offer than nature experiences, Funen has a remarkable cultural history that can be experienced anywhere on the island.
The landscape
The charming island includes areas that offer some of the most beautiful landscapes in Denmark. In the north of Funen, also known as ”the plain of North Funen”, with the beautiful market towns Kerteminde and Nyborg, the landscape is more flat than on the rest of the island and incredibly fertile. Here, you will also find the peninsula Enebærodde; a protected nature reserve and heath area with a rich plant and animal life. In the middle of Funen, the landscape is characterised by green beech forests that are intersected by small streams and lakes and have an amazing bird life. The landscape in the south of Funen is hilly and is also known as “the alps of Funen” and offer the most beautiful views of the ocean and the surrounding islands.
Beaches
With a coast line covering approx. 1100 kilometres and more than 90 surrounding islands, there are plenty of possibilities for a bathing holiday on Funen. Funen is known for very child-friendly beaches that are ideal for the family holiday.
Hasmark Beach
Hasmark Beach is one of Funen’s best and most popular bathing beaches. It extends several kilometres from Enebærodde to Bårdesø and Tørresø Beach. The water is shallow and child-friendly.
Båring Beach - Nørre Aaby
Lovely, child-friendly beach where the water is very shallow. There can be a small section with a rocky bottom at the water’s edge, but after that, you will reach a very soft sandy bottom.
Flyvesandet – Otterup
The only area with dunes on Funen, including a child-friendly beach that extends towards the salty Kattegat.
Tourist attractions
Manor houses
Visit some of the many beautiful and old manor houses that are located close to each other on Funen, Ærø and Langeland. With their vast fields, forest avenues and stone fences, they are worth visiting.
Hans Christian Andersen
The most famous native of Funen, Hans Christian Andersen, was born in Odense. Today, you can visit his childhood home in the centre of Odense and go by the cultural centre ”Fyrtøjet” (the tinderbox), which tells the story of the author and which is an experience for children as well as adults.
The Funen Village
Visit The Funen Village in the southern part of Odense. The village is from the age where Hans Christian Andersen was alive, and you can see what the village would have looked like in the 1800s. Walk around among a number of farms and houses that have originally been located in different areas on Funen and the islands.
