Northern Jutland

Northern Jutland

Northern Jutland is the perfect place to be on holiday – here, there is time and space to experience the open spaces with your family, as well as the roaring ocean, the old dune plantations and the lyme grass-covered dunes. Northern Jutland is known for its amazing nature richness and the special light that has inspired so many artists throughout the ages. There are a lot of activities all year in Northern Jutland, which means that apart from experiencing and enjoying the wonderful nature, you have plenty of opportunities to immerse in culture and history during your holiday.

The landscape

Go on hikes in the beautiful, rugged landscape in Northern Jutland, which includes Denmark's longest sandy beach and Denmark's largest forest – Rold skov. The stretch of coast at Lønstrup offers magnificently varied and interesting nature and is by many considered the most interesting and varied on the North Sea coast of Denmark. The area around Saltum is known as the Alps of Jammerbugten – by Danish standards, the 100-metre hills of Saltum are practically mountains! There are animals and wonderful nature experiences everywhere – and not least peace and quiet. You should also visit the charming and lively tourist and bathing towns Blokhus, Løkken or Lønstrup, where the old atmosphere has been preserved. In these towns, the townscape is characterised by narrow and windy roads with old fisherman’s cottages, all kinds of artist workshops, shops, cafés and restaurants that are worth visiting summer as well as winter.

Beaches

A study made in 2006 by the newspaper Jyllands-Posten showed that the readers of Jyllands-Posten found that Northern Jutland has the best bathing beaches, which many would probably agree with.

All the way from Skagen in the north to Agger in the south, you can experience the finest, white, wide sandy beaches in Northern Europe and the roaring North Sea. On the eastern coast, you will find the slightly more child-friendly sandy beaches at the more peaceful Kattegat.

Tourist attractions

Galleries and exhibitions

The landscape of Northern Jutland has always attracted many artists, and you can experience their work in many small galleries around the towns of Northern Jutland. If you would like to see earlier artists’ interpretation of the nature of Northern Jutland, a visit to Skagen’s Museum is recommendable. The permanent collection includes many major works from the end of the 1800s, where the famous Skagen painters had their golden age.

Aalborg

A trip to the town of Aalborg should include a visit to the impressive, large cathedral Sct. Budolfi, where you can hear the lovely carillon every hour. After that, you can go to Aalborg Zoo, where you can experience 140 animal species from all over the world.

Råbjerg Mile

Råbjerg Mile is the largest migrating dune of Denmark and from the highest point, there is a magnificent view of the dune landscape on Skagen’s Grenen.

Skagen’s Grenen

Grenen – the well-known landmark of Northern Jutland, which is the most northern point of Denmark where the 2 oceans Kattegat and the North Sea meet, would be an obvious choice for an outing during your holiday in Northern Jutland.

Den tilsandede Kirke (the sand-buried church)

The sand-buried Sct. Laurentii Church is located south of Skagen in the plantation area at the main road. The church was probably built in the late 1300s, and because of sand drift, only the church tower remains today.
