Campania

Campania

Felix means luck, and you will soon understand why the Italian region Campania is called "Campania Felix". The inhabitants are known for their high spirits.
A holiday in Campania offers beauty, drama, history, culture, sun and sea, all at one time. You will find the wonderful Amalfi Coast with classic cities such as Ravello, Amalfi and Positano. But also the Sorrento peninsula and the view over the Naples bay and the volcano Vesuv, which watches over the landscape and which despite its powers does not discourage the inhabitants from living close to its fertile slopes, are unique experiences. If you are in Campania, you will soon feel the magic, romance and charm which surround the region.
The landscape of Campania
Campania has a rich nature with beautiful coastal stretches, beautiful islands, mountains and rivers.

Large cities in Campania: Naples, Cetara, Benevento and Salerno

Naples, which is the capital of Campania, has its own history, character and melody. The city is situated by one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean Sea, and there is a striking contrast between sunny piazzas and dark narrow streets, fine Baroque churches and futuristic skyscrapers.
Cetara is a charming city south-west of Palermo which has a very characteristic and authentic touch.

Benevento has a long and important history and is, among others, known for its beautiful triumphal arch which was built under the emperor Trajan.

Salerno in the south is beautifully located to the sea. Large parts of the city were exposed to heavy bombardments during World War II, which is why parts of the city are of a more modern style.

Tourist attractions in Campania

Naples is a true gem if you like arts or are interested in history as you will find undreamt-of possibilities of exploring the many museums of Naples. Among others, visit the archaeological national museum, the Duomo, or the king’s castle, Castle Nuovo, from the 17th century, the famous opera house or the fortress from the 13th century.
For people interested in theatre and music, Naples is a true paradise and you will also find wonderful culinary experiences here.

Along the beautiful Amalfi Coast, you will find Pompeii; the city that was buried under ashes and pumice stone during the eruption of Vesuv in A.D. 79. The city was hidden in a magic sleep for one and a half millennium. Thanks to the excavations that started in 1748, you can now step into the Antiquity world and get insight into the everyday Roman life. You can walk the streets and pavements laid during Antiquity and watch market halls, temples and well-preserved private homes.
The Sorrento peninsula is, despite a certain turnout of tourists, a wonderful experience. The city spreads up the slopes, and from several spots, you can enjoy a fantastic panorama of the Naples bay.

Sports activities in Campania

The skiing resort Laceno in Campania offers fantastic skiing experiences and is popular among skiing enthusiasts.

In Campania, you will find many wonderful beaches where you and your family can enjoy yourselves in the water or on the beach. You could, for instance, go to the beach Pioppi de Pollica which was elected one of the best beaches in Italy in 2005. But also the beaches Positano, Agropoli, Castellabate and Montecorice-Agnone are wonderful places where you can play with friends and family.

Campania may be best known for being the home country of the pizza. But Campania has a lot more delicious things to offer. You will find lots of wonderful, fresh fish while the cuisine in the more central parts of Campania often consists of venison and other sorts of meat. Like in many other parts of Italy, they also eat a lot of lamb and pork in Campania.

Campania has a lot of exciting ingredients such as lemon, forest fruits, truffles, mushrooms, hazel nuts, figs, chestnuts and wonderful cheeses and sausages. The well-known cheese, Mozzarella di Buffala, also originates from here.

Some of Italy’s best restaurants are on the Sorrento peninsula, e.g. try Don Alfonso and Torre del Saracino.

Scenic CampaniaIn recent years, a large number of very exciting and good vineyards have popped up in Campania with fantastic wines on local grape sorts. Among the best known wines are the red wine Taurasi, which is made from the aglianico grape. If you like wine, you can combine a trip with a visit to one of the best vineyards in Campania; Feudi di San Gregorio, Mastroberardino, Salvatore Molettieri, Antonio Caggiano, Terredora di Paolo, Cantina del taburno, Villa Matilde, Caputo, Luigi Maffini and Marisa Cuomo.
