Siena

Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany. The medieval city is set on three hills and drawn together by winding alleyways and steep steps. Siena is famous for the "Palio", the annual historic horse-races, which take place on 2 July and 16 August, but the city is also home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe, which bring a vibrant Italian student atmosphere to the town. In addition to the busy daily life of the streets and squares of the city, Siena offers many cultural events, concerts, cinema, theatre, sport activities and exciting buildings as the cathedral Basilica di San Domenico and the impressive city hall Palazzo Pubblico and its beautiful square Piazza del Campo.
Siena is surrounded by a beautiful variety of landscape which is reachable by car or public service. The city itself and the surroundings make Siena a good place to base yourself for a holiday in Tuscany.
