The landscape is a result of the volcanic formation of the island and of its special position in the Atlantic Ocean.

Well known is Malvasia sweet wine The Malvasia grape is only grown in areas with a thick layer of volcanic ash and lava. The grapevines have to be planted several meters into the ground so that the roots are in the rich underlying soil.
