The landscape of La Palma

The landscape is a result of the volcanic formation of the island and of its special position in the Atlantic Ocean.

The coastline and the valley areas are made up of farmlands, while the mountainous areas are forested or grassy. The southern cape Punta de Fuencaliente, where the most recent volcanic activities took place, consists of lava and ashes.

Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente is a national park in the island. It contains the enormous expanse of the Caldera de Taburiente, a large crater which dominates the northern part of the island.

Cueva de Belmaco, a cave with prehistoric engravings and Cueva Bonita, a beautiful grotto deserve a visit.

Gastronomic characteristics of La Palma

Las Palma is self sufficient with wine and Banana plantations. Oranges, avocados, cactus fruits and figs and vegetables also grow here. On the menu you will find pork, lamb and goat and many different fishes served with potatoes. Many local desserts are based on two products of La Palma, almonds and honey. 

Well known is Malvasia sweet wine The Malvasia grape is only grown in areas with a thick layer of volcanic ash and lava. The grapevines have to be planted several meters into the ground so that the roots are in the rich underlying soil.

La Palma enjoys a stable climate: pleasant temperatures in all seasons, warm in the winter, sometimes cloudy and not too hot in the summer.
