Galicia

Galicia

Galicia is situated remote, rural, and by the Atlantic, in the north-western area of Spain. This area not only looks like Ireland but there are further parallels in the climate, culture, music and traces of its Celtic past. Galicia is lush and heavily wooded in native oaks and pines. The coastline is shaped by fjord-like inlets, source of some of the best seafood in Europe. In the north, lies the unspoiled old villages and fine beaches.

The landscape of Galicia

The coast offers great contrasts, from the smooth beaches of As Mariñas to the dangerous cliffs and picturesque fishing ports of Costa de la Muerte. At the area of Rías Altas you will find magnificent beaches, impressive towns and beautiful fishing villages. Rías Baixas are worth a visit for their natural preserves, and delightful pine-fringed cove. Inland, Galicia can be bleak and empty showing green landscapes and romantic villages with hórreos.

Large cities in Galicia

Santiago de Compostela, the final destination of the famous Pilgrimage Way, is certainly among Spain's most stunningly beautiful cities. Its medieval core has been declared in its entirety to be both a national monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
