Costa de Almería

Costa de Almería

The province of Almería is located in the south-east of Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Until recently, Costa Almeria was less accessible than the other Spanish destinations, a fact which has undoubtedly helped to protect the coast from the excess of tourism and let it to become the unspoiled, peaceful place that it is today. Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and finally the Arabs arrived to its shores due to its natural beauty and useful geographic location. The important archaeological remains found in the province have helped researchers to discover and to analyse the existence of old cultures.

The landscape of Costa de Almería

Inland from Costa Almeria is the sole desert of Europe, almost a lunar landscape with sandstone cones and dried-up riverbeds. The landscape of Almería, like much of southern Spain, is dominated by mountain chains that were once below sea level and rivers cut into them, leading to the creation of the stunning landscapes that we see today. The coast to the east is still largely unspoiled and the beaches are wonderful. In spite of the inhospitable dry soil, the province has managed to create a thriving agricultural industry with plastic-covered tunnel farms, which provide vegetables, fruits and flowers the entire  Europe.

Large cities in Costa de Almería: Almeria

With its interesting medieval architecture, Almeria’s old town is a delight to stroll through, with its tranquil, nice-looking squares, archways and colonnades. The city also has a fascinating Archaeological Museum and unique cave dwellings in the hillside above the old gypsy quarter.

Other interesting towns are Mojácar, Roquetas and Carboneras.

Tourist attractions in Costa de Almería

At the most south-eastern corner of Spain is the peninsula known as the Cabo de Gata. This is Andalucía’s largest coastal Nature Park visited particularly by nature lovers and back-packers. It is neighbouring the volcanic mountains and the sand dunes. Attractive beaches and secret coves make up the Sierra de Cabo de Gata shoreline. In spite of the doleful lunar landscape hikers troop here since many coves in this area can only be reached on foot. All year round there's an intense, almost luminous, sunlight. This and the peculiar scenery have made Almería one of the most popular film locations in Europe.

Sports activities in Costa de Almería

Fishing, sailing, underwater photography, swimming and windsurfing are just some of the water activities that can be enjoyed in Cabo de Gata. The inland, however, is perfect for mountain biking and 4x4 driving.

Gastronomic characteristics of Costa de Almería

The cuisine of this region shares two basic common ingredients olive oil and spices. Some dishes like marinade sardines, clams, shrimps, seafood soup, paprika, stews and porridge are also a legacy from the region's rich past.
